It is customary for Ottoman Sultans to erect a grand mosque that they sponsor — a mark of their era of leadership in the region. The interesting fact about this mosque is that it was built by the personal funds of a democratically elected President — not a Sultan.
Built with over a USD 300M budget it definitely is grandiose in every sense. Be sure to visit the upper floors when going inside to see a different view of the mosque and different colored tiles/marbles on other floors.
Lastly, if you are praying Muslim — the ablutions area where you wash off before prayer is in the basement level, which you can enter from outside. Have a great visit! Good historical landmark!
